WB Animation, YOUNG JUSTICE, Project Cadmus, Amanda Spence, and Dr. Mark Desmond. Pencil, Photoshop color.
Here are a couple more character designs from the premiere episode of YOUNG JUSTICE. Amanda Spence is an assistant research scientist at Cadmus. Dr. Mark Desmond heads the sub-level labs of the Cadmus facility, aided by The Guardian, and a veritable army of diverse clone creatures, led by Dubbilex. Desmond ingests a special concoction to become the monstrous Blockbuster.
The direction was to give Desmond a laid-back, almost hippie look, complete with sandals, baggy trousers, and a pony-tail hairdo. Here, applying my own color schemes (not featured in the final screen version), I added a loud print shirt to further emphasize Desmond's anti-corporate style. I thought actor Rene Auberjonois was fantastic as the voice of Desmond. But his wasn't the voice I imagined, or might have chosen.
You're not a boy, you're a weapon! and you belong to ME!
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

AMANADA SPENCE! I know her well!! I was surprise when I heard the names, let alone seeing them. This show makes more references to the Superboy comic than the mainstream comics!
Desmond reminds me of Specks and Trapper *I think his name was Trapper...* from Static Shock.
They really need to stop airing that show at 4 AM...

The cake is a lie. There never was a cake. EVER. In fact, how am I even talking to you about this cake? Who are you? GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! ... Nebula Thorn: I'm a FAIRY, dumbass. Call me a pixie and your arms come off.
Huh, interesting design direction they gave you with the good Dr. I can't say that I altogether think it was successful, though. I mean, the idea of a laid back, hippie-ish, anti-professional Dr. in a lab coat works, and the show's portrayal of an anally uptight, severe, scheming, anti-corporate Dr. works as well. But the decision to try to merge the two into the same character seems oxymoronic to me. Why would he dress casually, relaxed, and laid-back with such a hyper-serious, don't-mess-around mentality? I call design flaw, but of course, none of that falls on you. You were given directions and you followed them admirably.

As far as characters go, we often have in our minds too many preconceived notions that form stereotypes. Who is to say that all hippies behave the same way? Not I. And the merging of certain types in an oxymoronic or paradoxical way can yield benefits, including what may appear to be a fresher approach to an old idea. We must open our minds, or else limit the possibilities, and that's no fun.

"All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."
But I think it might have been even better if voiced by Jeff Bridges, or Philip Seymour Hoffman.

"All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."
But it was only a wish list, and my own imagination. Budgets and availability being what they are, this is why the part went to Auberjonois.
