WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Paula Crock. Pencil, Digital Color.
First appearing in the YOUNG JUSTICE episode, "Downtime," Paula Crock is the mother of Artemis. She is struggling to raise her daughter despite an apparent handicap, and she yearns to give Artemis the opportunities she herself never had. Much is left unrevealed about Paula Crock, and only time will tell if the mysteries will be unriddled.
I designed Paula as a tragic figure, a woman who is broken in more ways than just her physical appearance. With my personal color selections, I chose to depict her as careworn, or haggard. Her hair is disheveled, she wears no cosmetics, and there are dark circles under her bloodshot eyes. I wanted her clothing to be poor, drab, and almost colorless, reflecting a weary, possibly shattered spirit.
Paula's wheelchair was expertly rendered by my pal, Dusty Abell. He followed reference and a rough sketch I provided, carefully matching the positioning of the figure. Thanks again, Dusty!

Aww, I really just want to hug her and feed her and make her happy! She definitely looks drab and disheveled. She just looks so sad it makes me want to cry! Poor Paula. Damn you Lawrence Crock! Must be sad only having your daughter left as your family, knowing that your ex-husband and other daughter are out killing people. Some happy family. BTW I like her shoes!
You made a great choice to add her into the story. I feel sad for her because this is how it is in life, it's a struggle, and tragedy is hard to avoid, which is why it also makes us appreciate what we have.
She brings that reality of life in the show through her will to want to give Artemis the best chances what is exactly what all parents want for their children.

Not necessarily looking for the best in people, but always hoping for a happy ending for everyone, even if said ending defies logic.
