WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Mr. Tawny. Pencil, Digital Color.

In the episode, "Alpha Male," Captain Marvel befriends a captured Bengal tiger. This tiger would be named "Mr. Tawny," by Marvel (as an homage to the version that appeared in the "Captain Marvel" comic books).

Originally, I designed the tiger to resemble the other animals that were mutated into monsters, with bony protrusions, and a hide ripped open from radically increased mass. Gruesome stuff! However, since it was determined that all mutations are permanent, the producers decided to have me scale back in the version which was finally approved. But, for kicks, I'm presenting the freakish version here. I already have a normal Tawky Tawny posted elsewhere in my gallery, and that's what we reused for this episode.

*Mr. Tawky Tawny is the property of Warner Bros Animation, and DC Comics.

Cheers!

Thank you for posting all of this background information about the episodes. I am really enjoying reading about it as much as I have been watching the shows.

Too bad they didn't let you keep the mutations, although he would've looked decidedly less friendly. If Mr. Tawny is just an homage, will we ever see a tiger walking around on two feet?

Honestly, as much fun as a walking, talking tiger might be, I think that sort of thing is a tad too outlandish for the more realistic/less cartoony tone of the shows currently being produced at WB Animation. Even the satirical BRAVE AND THE BOLD may find that kind of anthropomorphism out of place.

In the Direct-To-Video feature DC SHOWCASE: SUPERMAN/SHAZAM!: THE RETURN OF BLACK ADAM, the Mr. Tawky Tawny character may have spoken, but the impression is clear that the realistic feline is a magical shape-shifter who initially appears in human form. And the tiger form definitely walked on all fours.

Makes sense. Actually, I prefer him on all fours anyway. :D Hope we'll see more of him in the future though!

I think this design makes a lot more sense, but I like the other one too, because I feel like it would be a lot easier for Captain Marvel to care for a creature that doesn't look quite so scary.
