WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION, Dan Garret. Pencil, Digital color.
In the YOUNG JUSTICE Season Two episode entitled, "Intervention," it is revealed to Jaime Reyes the true origins of the Blue Beetle scarab, and its presence on Earth. Via flashback, we see that Robin and Batgirl hacked the computer files of the late Ted Kord to learn that the scarab had been discovered by archaeologist Dan Garret on a dig in Bialya in the late 1930s. Believing the scarab to be an ancient mystical artifact, Garret used it to become the original Blue Beetle.
In designing this character, I decided to borrow from Humphrey Bogart in THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, and THE AFRICAN QUEEN, as well as from RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Producer Brandon Vietti approved of my idea to go with a fedora, as a wink to Indiana Jones. The archaeological dig need not have been a cave at all, but when I found some cool images on the Web, I couldn't resist using a cave as an interesting backdrop here. These colors are my own selections, and do not reflect what appears in the actual episode. And, as always, the art style is that established by Mr. Phil Bourassa.
