WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Bibbo-Puppet. Pencil, Digital Color.
In the Season Two episode, "Alienated," Bibbo Bibbowski, owner/operator of Bibbo's Diner, is the latest person to be revealed by the YJ Team to be-- controlled by an alien!!! In a dramatic chase through a back alley, "Bibbo" is felled with one punch by the real Bibbo, and as the downed imposter's abdomen splits open, a little Krolotean Driver emerges from this puppet to make his escape.
Bibbo Bibbowski was originally created for DC Comics by Jerry Ordway, and my friend Marv Wolfman. The character reminds me of Popeye The Sailor, but despite the various similarities, I'm not sure if there is an intended homage. With my personal choice of colors, I thought Bibbo should have a ruddy, or swarthy complexion, due to his years spent as a longshoreman. And since he's such an unabashed fan of Superman, I allowed his clothes to reflect the traditional red-and-blue of the Man of Steel.
Once again, I was called upon to depict a macabre scene image, as a humanoid robot opens up to reveal an alien dwelling within. Although the final animation shows the clothes being ripped open on the Bibbo-Puppet (a la "ALIEN"), I didn't feel that to be realistic in this case. In my depiction, the hatchway doors simply push the shirts and apron aside. It's less dramatic, of course, but I prefer this solution. Your mileage may vary. Haha!
