WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Greta, and Billy Hayes, Photo. Pencil, Digital Color.
In the Season One episode, "Secrets," my friend Peter David makes his writing debut on the animated YOUNG JUSTICE show with a story featuring two characters he co-created, Harm, and Secret. It's an appropriately haunting tale, to set the tone for Halloween.
It was my assignment to create a family "photo" for use in a brief scene. The photo image needed to portray the sibling duo in happier times, when Harm and Secret were still simply Billy and Greta Hayes. I thought it was obvious to go the hard-rocker route with Billy's design, preserving an edgy look for the man who would later become the psychopath. I depicted Greta as the doting little sister, embracing her big brother. But, you'll notice that I was careful not to have Billy return the embrace. Not quite. Although it's established that Billy definitely loved his sister, I chose to use his casual detachment as a subtle hint at the betrayal, and horrific tragedy that was to come (In the DC Comics history, Billy was actually adopted into Greta's family.). Of course, these are details that may be lost on the viewer. But sometimes in art there can be comprehension on a subconscious level. And even if my meticulous effort goes unmarked and unthanked, I still derive a simple, private satisfaction.
*If you use "Download" to take a closer look at this image, you might spot a secret little inside joke, if you have an eagle-eye!
As always, these are my own color selections, and they may differ from that used in the actual episode. Here's a link to the actual photo as it appears in the epsiode: [link]
As you can see, my color selections are deliberately brighter, with the intent to strike a stark contrast between the happy past, and the dark present. Thanks for viewing!
