WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Civilian Identity Flash Family. Pencil, Digital Color.
In the YOUNG JUSTICE episode, "Downtime," there is a birthday party scene for Jay Garrick (the original Flash) at the home of Wally West (Kid Flash). Following the art style established by Lead Character Designer Phil Bourassa, and utilizing reference from DC Comics, I submitted these designs for Mary and Rudy West, and Joan and Jay Garrick.
All the color selections here are my own. The characters are the copyrighted property of DC Comics.
*My design for Barry Allen was rejected, as Phil decided to go for a younger look for this character. So, Barry is presented here as slightly "phased out," indicating his "Cutting Room Floor" status. He wears sneakers colored to recall his superhero alter ego.
**My initial design for the elderly Jay Garrick was also rejected for being too old, and had to be revised. Since it was stated that Garrick is 90 years old, my first impulse was to depict a happily retired hero, although still impressive for his advanced age. However, it was determined that the Speed Force, from which the various Flashes draw their power, also preserves some measure of youth and vitality. And so, my revision of Jay Garrick discards the "old man" sweater, and the character has a more vigorous and energetic stature.
I love the behind scenes look, and as always I am in awe of your talent.
Out of curiosity, do you know if originally if Joan Garrick was based on Barbara Stanwyck? Looking at a reprint of the first appearance of the golden age Flash, I'd swear that Harry Lampert was drawing Stanwyck.
Haha! Not quite, but I can almost see it. Maybe it was an unconscious thing. Otherwise, I might have asked her to model for me. She's a real sweetheart, and her office is only 30 feet away from mine. I wish I'd thought of it then.
