YOUNG JUSTICE: BEAST BOY TRANSFORMATIONS by Jerome-K-Moore YOUNG JUSTICE: BEAST BOY TRANSFORMATIONS by Jerome-K-Moore
WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE: INVASION, Beast Boy Transformations. Pencil, Digital color.

Mr. Phil Bourassa guest-stars in this illustration, since I'm borrowing his design of Beast Boy for character reference (Hi, Phil!). Among my assignments is to render some of the animal versions of young Garfield Logan (along with my pal Dusty Abell). As established in DC Comics, each animal form retains Beast Boy's verdant hues (for purposes of identification). However, for the show, it was decided to also retain his uniform collar as a means of explaining that his clothes instantaneously expand from, or contract into this shape to accommodate his bestial and humanoid forms.

Pictured here is Beast Boy as an African elephant, a peregrine falcon, and a callithrix, or green monkey. Thanks for viewing!

*Beast Boy is the property of DC Comics, and WB Animation.

This has always bugged me, why didn't he change into dinosaurs?

I reckon he only transformed into beasts with which he was familiar.   Since dinosaurs are extinct, he would be guessing about everything but the bone structure.  Although this might still work, I imagine it may be a bit more difficult.  And it also depends upon who writes the story.

I like how when he turns into an animal, he has some sort of color cloth around his neck, so that he'll still have cloths when he turns back to his normal stage.

And I thought that it was so sweet of Megan to take care of him ^^

Question. What's with the collar in his transformations? Is it a control device or something?

The producers felt the character's animal forms needed a further identifier, beyond the green coloring. Additionally, there was the need to explain what happens to Gar's uniform when he transforms. Otherwise, you would have green animals wearing a red and white suit.

If it happens, good for them. It would be an historic precedent, with the fans demonstrating that they do matter, and they do have power.

As always, your creations are nothing short of an amazement! Even if you don't draw many animals, it's stunning. Beast Boy's designs in YJ are one of my favourites, i must admit

Having to do realistic animals alongside cartoon human designs can't be easy. Good work here, though.

Glad you guys came up with a visual reminder why his clothes remain undamaged from all his transformin'. Always appreciate little details like that.

Of course. Never had a talent for drawing animals myself, cartoon or otherwise. Good to see people animating them.

Ya know, I never really drew many animals before this show. Sure, I may have sketched a dog here or there. And there was that time I had to draw whales and stuff for an Aquaman project long ago. But once I started working at WB Animation, I've been called upon to illustrate DINOSAURS, lions, wildebeest, elephants, tigers, apes... All or most for the very first time. Crash course. I do the research, gather my reference, and dive right in.

They require what qualifies as a more realistic style than shows like Looney Tunes because, despite whatever exaggeration in the humanoid characters, this is a much more realistic show than Scooby-Doo. In fact, in a pinch, when we borrow a model from another show, often I'm asked to make that drawing less "cartoony" in order to adhere to the established style and tone of our show. :)

This is amazing in its own right, the detail you put into the animals is amazing to say the least. I honestly never really liked elephants as much as most people do, but this one looks just plain badass. I like the idea of the coller thing on his uniform, too many people go with the idea of the suit just magically disappearing with the transformation. And it could serve as a sign of identification if BB ever shifted something that is naturally green. Again, great job on this picture, it's wonderful and amazing in every posible way :)

Thanks!

I had some help with the elephant. I used a toy I had from "PAPO" as excellent reference. You never know when something you bought will come in handy for an art project. Tax deductible, baby! Hahaha!

"However, for the show, it was decided to also retain his uniform collar as a means of explaining that his clothes instantaneously expand from, or contract into this shape to accommodate his bestial and humanoid forms."

Nice! Most shows/publications with morphing characters just take it for granted that the clothes magically change along with the wearer when the shifter morphs, and expects the audience to go along with it. Glad they threw in a plausible explanation...well, as plausible as one can get in Comiclandia.

Glad that the "unstable molecules" cosume/collar thing was brought back. Other than the first few issues of NEW TEEN TITANS and a mention in his old WHO'S WHO entry, I don't think anyone, I don't think anyone ever used it or even remembered it.

That being said, I'm kinda turned off by his Moreau-esque monkey-boy appearance. It harkens back to his origin with being bitten by an infected monkey but still... I guess it just has a creepy "flying monkey from WIZARD OF OZ" thing that I can't get past.

I understand. But I believe the decision was made to keep Beast Boy obvious and unique. The idea is that Garfield is so pleased by his abilities, he actually chooses to retain a simian appearance as his usual form.
