WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Amanda Waller. Pencil, Digital color.

In the episode, "Terrors," Amanda Waller appears as the warden of Belle Reve State Penitentiary. The atmosphere inside the prison reminded me of "The Shawshamk Redemption," one of my favorite films. Waller certainly comes across as tough-as-nails, albeit not corrupt like Warden Norton (played brilliantly in the neo-classic film by actor Bob Gunton).

I designed Waller, starting from a rough sketch provided by Emmy Award-winning Lead Character Designer, Phil Bourassa. I re-worked things a little bit, going in a direction inspired by the Amanda Waller I remembered from DC Comics, as she appeared in issues of Suicide Squad. I hope you like it.

i have to say i prefered this version to the one that apeared in 'public enemies' - who was way to over weight in my opinion - realy well done on the design :)

i love the Suicide Squad, i love Amanda Waller and i love Young Justice so the episode Terrors was a real treat for me. and yeah The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best movies ever made. so far i'm enjoying the Suicide Squad reboot series although there's still some stuff i'm trying to get used to like Waller's thinner look but i'm not hung up on the whole issue cause Waller is still Waller. i think her look in Young Justice strikes a nice balance between being somewhat the heavy set woman that we're used to and having been feminized a bit much like in the Checkmate series. i have what is apparently the only Suicide Squad blog site in the entire world if your interested in taking a look at it here's a link [link]

You know, I must ask, between the Green Lantern movie and the DC relaunch, why are we all of a sudden trying to make her thin? Just wondering.

Anyway, nice design. I'm kinda wondering if we'll see her agien. Then agien, I'm just happy that new episodes are airing. I was starting to thin Greg Weismen had some knda curse or something.

It's nice to see that though tough, she does look (somewhat) feminine. In JLU she barely looked like she had any estrogen on her... =P

I am SO HAPPY to see this Amanda Waller in Young Justice. THIS is the powerful woman I grew up with who was an icon for strong women of color! I'm happy to see Young Justice doing her right!

Absolutely! I'm sure you've been hearing a lot about the displeasure of Skinny Amanda Waller in the reboot. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal to the average weighted population. but in a world where skinny seems to be the only option for success. to plus size folks like myself it's a huge deal. Amanda waller isn't the stereotypical fat, lazy, slob sitting on the couch cramming junk food in her face, shes a strong, educated, business women, she gets things DONE. she commands authority and respect she just so happens to be plus size. it's refreshing to see!

speaking as a plus size Hispanic woman, I wish there were more characters like Amanda waller around. who don't let a little thing like weight get in their way of taking charge and getting what they want done!...even if what they want isn't always with the purest of intentions.
