WB Animation Character Design, YOUNG JUSTICE, Coral, Topo. Pencil, Digital Color.
With the airing here in the U.S. of the YJ episode, "DownTime," it's permissible to now post this incidental character design. As requested, I'm posting our new version of TOPO. After my friend, artist Dusty Abell submitted a cool design, I was asked to revise Topo's head to make him "cuter," and possibly younger in appearance. So, this is sort of an unintentional collaboration, since I kept Dusty's design for the body.
Topo is a minor figure from the early part of DC Comics' Silver Age, first appearing as Aquaman's octopus pet, and sidekick (Adventure Comics #229). More recently, in the Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis series, another character was given the name "Topo" as a respectful nod to the original. However, this new Topo was a human/cephalopod hybrid. In YOUNG JUSTICE, Topo is one of the many diverse students in Queen Mera's Conservatory of Sorcery. He uses his skills to recount a heroic tale for Aqualad, a wonderfully stylish animated sequence designed by artist Tom Perkins, and director Jay Oliva.
Coral is an incidental character, and another of the students appearing very briefly in the Conservatory scene. I designed her as a bit of a punker type, with much of her outfit fashioned from natural aquatic materials. She is completely original, and is not officially named in the animated episode.
*As always, the art style used is set and approved by Phil Bourassa, and the color choices here are my own.
Were the two of them drawn in different programs? Coral looks real clean and exact, like maybe she'd been done in Illustrator with vector lines, and Topo looks a bit more like he was drawn in Photoshop with a brush.

"Alderaan called. They want their existence back."
Hmm... You have a pretty keen eye, Hero. Well done. The fact is that I only cleaned up my portions of these designs, including Coral, and Topo's head. I left Topo's body at the basic "clean-up" level that I found it, which is actually the accepted standard for most productions. Not everybody suffers from perfectionism the way I do. And that's cool.

"All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."
I may not always at first, because I sometimes tend to get sick of working on one picture after it hit's the "THERE, FINALLY IT'S DONE" point. But after a day or so I'll go back and look at it and notice certain things that just sort of bother me, so I'll go back and adjust them. I try to keep all the original PSD and AI files for my work just for that purpose.

These are well designed characters, and it was a delight to see them in action. I grew up renting old movies and such, and the ancient Aquaman VHS videos are still fresh in my memory. It's nice to see Atlanteans get an overhaul, and it was a particular delight to see this cephilapod wonder appear.
Keep doing that voodoo, guys. Its been hard to fill the hole left when Justice League: Unlimited ran its course. Young Justice is shaping up to fill that niche nicely. The public has been jonesing for some good DC 'toons.
I think this is a great time to be a kid growing up as a comic book fan. With all the new television cartoons, DVD features, and theatrical releases, superheroes have never been more prevalent. As long as Hollywood feels they can make money, they'll continue to pimp the genre. Soak it up while you can!

Maybe being underrated has something to do with being underwater. Heh.
