WB Marketing Art, THE WIZARD OF OZ, Flying Monkey Turn. Pencil.

In order to aid licensees in their effort to manufacture sculptures for toys, and figurines, it was necessary to generate illustrations that "spelled out" the details of specific characters as translated in three dimensions. Here, I rendered the front view of one of the Flying Monkeys (also referred to as Winged Monkeys) in a neutral pose.

Initially, the art direction was to depict all the Oz film characters more realistically. It was thought that the obvious costume imperfections, the wrinkles, and the make-ups might be undesirable. However, much of the fake quality actually adds to the charm of the Victor Fleming masterpiece, and the decision was made to remain faithful, flaws and all.

Hmmm... I don't remember posing for this.

But seriously, I'll be flying out to the coast in the Fall; you plan on attending any more Cons this year (Long Beach etc,)? I'll treat you to lunch!*

No plans to attend any conventions for me at this time, Tony. I haven't been to one in years. But, who knows, right? :)

Y'know, I can't say I blame you. I've gone years at a time without going to any of them, and then I'll get a bug up my butt for comics and decide to visit one-- what I find is a whole lotta stuff that I don't connect with in the least. A bunch of middle aged, beer-gut laden men sweating in tights... all-manner of uninspired "creators" peddling books that they themselves don't even like and probably wouldn't buy if they took a moment to objectively assess the stuff at their table.

I'll leave feeling dejected, disillusioned and asking myself,"What was the point of all this, what was it that I was looking for?" Then I'll remind myself of the potential of the medium (comics, animation, etc.) and that the proponents of an industry do not necessarilly reflect the highest ideals and aspirations of the industry. In the same sense that most of the practitioners of a given religious ideology don't necessarily reflect the highest ideals of the doctrines to which they subscribe, eh?

In any case, best to you and yours.

I was always a bit frightened by these guys as a kid, which is what the filmmakers wanted, no doubt. Cute and cuddly servants of the Wicked Witch of the West just wouldn't work-- my pretty! Hahaha!

Thanks, Guile!
But I never designed this character. That was done wayyyyyy back in the 1930s.
