Artist's Comments

Comic Book Cover Art, DC Comics, STAR TREK. Pencil, Ink, Brush, Pen, Opaque gouache.

DC regained its license to publish TREK after the success of THE VOYAGE HOME, something I had anticipated. There was the rumor of a Star Trek 5, directed by William Shatner, but thankfully, Paramount decided never to let that proposed film ever get to the screen. LOL!!

My idea for the first issue return was to render an image reminescent of the LAST issue cover, which I had illustrated years before. This was very "inside," and I didn't really expect anyone to get my intention except my editor and myself.

Inspiration also came from George Pérez's first-issue cover for Trek long ago, with the one-point perspective space-warp streaks, and I used the image of Enterprise from the conclusion of the first motion picture, where the beloved ship looms majestically toward the camera. I was mindful to update the ship's new serial number, appended with "A."

I've gone back through my books and your covers stick out like a sore thumb now. :) Was the editor pushing the other cover artist to do covers like yours? It seems like every other cover thats not yours is someone trying to make it look like yours.
Glad you posted this one. :)

Umm... I don't recall what the fill-in cover artists did, or whether they were pushed to mimic what I was doing. I just followed my own path.

The fact that my covers 'stick out like a sore thumb' to you is certainly an unpleasant image, but I think I know what you mean. lol I appreciate the left-handed compliment. Thank you.

Many moons ago, before Star Trek 6 came out, I was at a horse show (not by my own chosing have you) and I was pretty much bored out of my head. That's when they announced that Willian Shatner would be showing his horse. I perked up and thought, 'Thee William Shatner!?' I was far enough away that I wouldn't have know who it was had they not announced it. But then the host gave him an introduction and asked Bill that now that he's a director what would he rather give up, horses or directing. With my hand slightly over my mouth, I coughed "Directing!!!... *ahem*... "

And nice pic BTW. Did you always use photos or did you do them from memory?
