WB Marketing Art, The Tinman THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Continuing in the exhibition of my Oz collaboration with David Edward Byrd, here is the illustration for The Tinman collector's plate. The resolution on my photocopy is pretty bad. Apologies for that. I never received a decent scan, nor a complimentary plate.

Now, this pose and composition was selected by the ByrdMan, and I simply rendered Haley's likeness, and provided a tonal study of the figure in black and white pencil, just as I did with the Dorothy illustration.
Were I involved to a greater degree on the design end, I might have more carefully avoided some irksome parallels and tangents, most notably those formed by the placement of the brandished axe handle over that corner of the road, and in line with the trunks of the trees. I also don't like the half-hearted pattern comprising the Yellow Brick Road. Best to maintain a consistent perspective there, and allow the pattern to gradually fade into the distance more naturally.

Still, I think it turned out all right.
I'm a bit fussy. LOL!

Magnificent!!

This is a perfect series - so true to the original atmosphere of the movie. I'm really sad to hear you were overlooked when it came to the complimentary pieces...

Cool and what a great likeness of the actual actor who played the part! I live in Kansas so I've actually driven down the "Yellow Brick Road!" LOL

My heart would go pitter, patter,
If they'd given me a platter,
Instead I got the shafffft.

But my ego didn't shatter,
And it really doesn't matter,
Cuz I still have got my crafffft!

:)
