TIME TURNER by Jerome-K-Moore TIME TURNER by Jerome-K-Moore
WB Product Art, Hermione, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN. Pencil. The Time Turner was a nifty deus ex machina. But I always wondered just why Professor McGonagall would trust a third-year student with such a potentially dangerous device, no matter how dire the need, or clever and honest the student. The consequences for misuse, or theft are too mind-numbingly catastrophic to contemplate.

But it makes for a fun story. lol And it's a LOT easier to hide under a shirt than a DeLorean!

I was just rewatching that movie after seeing Deathly Hallows and was thinking the exact same thing! That's a freaking time machine, the time paradoxes and potential disasters it could cause! And all so she could attend classes for extra subjects. Bit extreme, I'm sure there are other simpler, less drastic and reality-warping solutions they could have come up with.
I could not help but feel a tad bit nervous at seeing how much the continuity of the time stream (I can't think of a better way to describe it) relied on pure luck, Hermione's quick wit and everything being at exactly the right place.
As an afterthought, wouldn't that be giving a student the option of get unlimited extra time to do their homework/cheat in exams without having to fear being caught?

It's as if people in the magic world purposely go out of their way to come up with what we muggle folk consider to be impractical solutions just because they can. Like having moving stair cases in a school where students and staff could easily get injured or die.

Awesome work btw! The lines look like brushstrokes.

I think that would have opened a crazy can of worms. There's a limitless amount of fanfictions - my favorite involves Harry, Ron, and Hermione stuck on the sinking Titanic because of the Time Turner - but I think Harry was a little too excited about the Patronus and saving Sirius to even think about saving his parents. Or maybe she just didn't want to get into all that in an otherwise not-so-complicated book.

But whatever, this is an awesome picture!

Harry's thoughts of his slain parents are with him nearly every moment of every day, and most everyone in his life reminds him of them. It's inescapable.

True, the urgency of of Sirius' serious situation (as well as Buckbeak) deservedly drew his immediate attention. But afterwards he WOULD have broached the topic of going back to save his parents. Sure, Rowling MAY have wanted to keep things trim in an already bloated tale, but I still regard this omission as a glaring narrative error.

Thanks!

It would have been cool to see Harry go back and try and save his parents - but I guess he lost his chance after all the Time Turners were smashed in Book 5. I think, at the end of Book 7, things have come full circle and he's at peace with their deaths ... a little, at least.

Awesome. Why is there blue in some places?

Because I did this in stages using a photocopier. I did the rough sketch first. Then I copied that, but I had the color copier print it out as a light blue so I could render the final pencil directly over the light blue lines.
Normally, I light-box the roughs, and do the final clean-up on a fresh sheet of paper. But when rendering likenesses, it's sometimes harder to see subtle facial details through the overlay, details I'd already solved in the rough, and I'd rather not guess at again.
So the blue you see here are rough sketch lines that simply showed up on the scan. Strictly unintentional. :)

Shame on you for being embarrassed. LOL! There's nothing wrong with asking a polite and honest question. We're all still learning, and we can all benefit from sharing.

Thank you for your kind words, and welcome home.

Thanks so much. The time turner scene is one of my faves, where she slaps harry's hand away ;P I've always loved gazing at artwork as superb as yours. I'm not really an artist as in the drawing sense, although i can do that to an extent; i'm a writer. And deviantart is like inspiration overload for me. That's why I joined. That, and all the nice people here. I've been on some pretty nasty sites, and the kindness and acceptance on this one blew me away

i bet Mcgonagall let her use it because she knew Hermione would wimp out most of the year and not use it for anything other than school. What a bookie.

oh the lost possibilities...

Personally, I think she also used it go back and reread every book she ever cracked open.

It does amaze me that Harry was never even TEMPTED to ask to go back to save his parents. Not even tempted to ASK!! I think Rowling dropped the ball on that one, despite her stellar talents as a scribe.

But perhaps Biff would've showed up and nicked the Time Turner, and Harry and Hermione would've needed to find Doc Brown in order to get --- back to the furture. lol

haha

no way. if harry went back, he'd never have succeeded in saving his parents. what could he have done? voldemort would have just blasted him away...and then there'd be some crazy alternate future for hogwarts.

Well, with a bloody Time Turner, the eventualities are endless, aren't they?

Harry could've revealed his identity to his parents and warned them to escape, or better prepare. He could've recruited the appropriate reinforcements. Or he could've conked old Voldy on the bean with a properly levitated pot. LOL!! You get the picture. And yes, the reality would've been altered remarkably. Hogwarts could've been a troll beach resort, with Firenze running a dude ranch in The No-Longer-Forbidden Forest. And Biff from Back To The Future would be the new headmaster, ruling with an iron fist.

Point is, the temptation for Harry would've undeniably been there. And Rowling missed it.
