THE WIZARD OF OZ: DOROTHY GALE and TOTO, TOO by Jerome-K-Moore THE WIZARD OF OZ: DOROTHY GALE and TOTO, TOO by Jerome-K-Moore
WB Marketing Art. Portrait of Dorothy and Toto from THE WIZARD OF OZ. Pencil.

This was rendered in meticulous detail as an assist for renowned artist David Edward Byrd, who was illustrating a series of collectible WOZ plates. I can't find the other 3 I did for him. The photo reference for such an old property was very difficult to work with. It was a struggle, but turned out well.

Ironic, considering the twister, that Dorothy's last name is "Gale." LOL!

See? Cuz it's-- all about-- the-- wind-- and...
...never mind...

*UPDATE - I'm deeply honored that this piece was selected as a DAILY DEVIATION, and so many more people here seem to have suddenly found it.

As for the meticulous detail rendering, yeah, it was a bit of labor. But, although the gingham dress pattern was tedious, it was Toto that was the real bitch! LOL!!

> ahem! < ...sorry...

Thank you so much, Monica. I appreciate your gracious comments.
Of course, the art style for YOUNG JUSTICE is one established by another artist, so that's not a true representation of my own. And this illustration merely references a photograph, so it's really an exercise in translating what I saw, and being as observant as possible.

You totally captured Judy's look. I'm glad Shirley Temple was stuck in that contract. Yea Dorothy was supposed to be younger. But I just can't picture somebody else doing as well.

It's always the case with great performances that you cannot imagine another actor in the role, even if that other actor was actually the first choice. Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones??? Stuart Townsend as Aragorn??? Hmm... I don't think so. Hahaha! But, we'll never know. Judy Garland was thoroughly enchanting as Dorothy, and we're all so privileged to have beheld her.

Would you believe Silvester Stallone as Jack T. Colton? That would way not work. If you remember who Jack T. Colton was. Hint: The "T" stands for trustworthy.

Awesome! Your attention to detail is Awe inspiring! This is perhaps one if not the BEST portrait of Judy Garland as Dorothy I have seen. You not only have captured her likeness perfectly (which is not easy to do) but you have captured her innocence and subtle vunerability...again AWESOME!

Tough to accurately say, since I didn't time myself.

I guess it would depend on various factors, including what method an artist uses. I've seen many life drawings here on the site that range in level of detail. Sometimes speed is less of a concern with portrait work such as this. Looking at it, I imagine I could do this again over the course of 7 to 8 hours. That's a long time for some, on a single illustration. But I'd prefer to be more leisurely about it.

by the way, seeing this, you did a majority of the work in this stage for that plate! The only thing you didn't do was the background but you laid such a strong foundation that I am sure when he saw this drawing he was relieved at how much he didn't have to now do!

O-M-G!!! This is freaking AMAZING! It's perfect--almost photographic! I don't know what I'm most impressed with--the dress or Toto's fur--such amazing detail. And the faces are so vibrant, I almost expect Dorothy to giggle and Toto to pant and bark!

Congrats on the Daily Deviation!
