THE FLASH by Jerome-K-Moore THE FLASH by Jerome-K-Moore
DC Comics Cover Sketch (Unused), The Flash. Pencil, prismacolor pencils, and markers.

Way back in my early comic book illustrator days at DC, I became somewhat adept at montage-style cover design. In a pinch, I rendered some art classified as "inventory" work, stuff that an editor keeps on file in case of a deadline emergency. This was around the time when DC had killed off the very popular Silver Age Flash, alias Barry Allen, in the epic event maxi-series called CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS (Hi, Marv, and George!). Taking up the Flash mantle was the former Kid-Flash, Wally West. It was an awkward transition, growing pains and such, a lot of self-doubt, and plenty of mourning. Wally made some rash decisions during this period. In this montage, I chose to represent his small farm background, his frivolous life after winning the lottery, his rift with the Teen Titans, and through this new struggle, the exhilaration of adopting his newest superhero identity, literally stepping into the speeding shoes of his mentor. In microcosm, it is a coming of age story, with all the inherent difficulties, and ups and downs. Over it all, the specter of the Barry Allen Flash looms, an inspiration for Wally, as much as it may be an onerous legacy to fulfill.

Now, it wasn't my regular routine to render a cover sketch with so much fastidious fuss and detail, nor is it ever customary in the business at all. But I guess I was trying harder to impress Mark Waid, an editor with whom I had never worked before. Heheh. Anyway, I decided to digitally clean up bits of this old drawing, and share it again online. It's a kick to go back and see the style in which I used to illustrate, so indicative of the era in which it was created. Yeah, this looks like the late 1980s. Haha!
I hope you like it! Cheers!

Sigh....
Seeing this just added 3 more gray hairs to my beard.

This is my new favorite Flash cover, and it was never used?! I love the Teen Titans in there! This obviously dates from the early 90's, not a great time for Wally's Book, at least for writing, but this art is AMAZING!

You mean, "Marvel." lol

My favorites are not exclusively DC or Marvel. I know lots of comics fans do that, but I figure, why limit yourself? If a character is cool, who cares what company publishes the adventures?

I dig Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Wolverine, Conan, Captain Marvel (both versions), Captain America, Wonder Woman, Black Panther, Iron Fist, Green Lantern, Flash, Black Widow, Green Arrow, Hulk, Iron Man... blah, blah, blah... :D

Like I said, why limit oneself? There's too much good stuff out there to sample and enjoy. Same with sports teams. I love the Lakers, but I still appreciated Michael Jordan, and Larry Bird.

Nah. I would take and raise the baby into a strong, cunning, and ruthless warrior. And when he/she asks to meet you, the biological mother, I will bring him/her to you. Trembling, you'll point to the reason why you traded him/her away, hanging in a neat frame upon the wall. After peering closely for a few tense moments, the warrior will shrug, and say:

"Meh. I can see that."

LOL!

This is brilliant.

Compositionally it says it all, each element stands on its own as a fully-realized piece of art. This preliminary is both an inspiration and an education (delicious AND nutritious ;-))... what more can you DO for me? I feel like I OWE you.* :-)

Looking at that portrait of the Flash without his mask is just inspiring. I think it’d be interesting to see the character presented in that fashion, I think it’d make him more marketable maybe...

I’m not sure how long ago you did this (judging by the outfit the Flash is wearing in front of that sportscar and the mullet) I suspect it’s somewhere around mid to late eighties?

I find it interesting that I have to date your art based on the style of clothing the figures inhabiting the work are wearing; in most cases I can simply look at an artists rendering and determine when it was done based on the stylistic trends of the time. But not you, your stuff is so timeless I have to evaluate it the same way I would a photograph.

Jerome K. Moore... damn. :wow:

* If you tell me where to send the check, I promise I won’t physically show up. ;-)
