WB Marketing Art, SPACE GHOST. Pencil, Digital Color.
Many, many moons ago, when I was a member of "Murderers' Row," the art department staff at Warner Bros Consumer Products, I was assigned the Space Ghost art program. WB had recently acquired all of the Hanna-Barbera characters, and despite SG's newfound success with younger fans as a self-parodying talk-show host, our objective was to restore some measure of the classic style (and dignity!) to the heroic outer space cop. I studied the old model sheets created by the great Alex Toth, and I sought to emulate his design, as well as infuse my own sensibilities based on my experiences as a comic book illustrator.
Originally, I just did a tight pencil drawing, and the art was inked, and colored by other contributors. The figure's image has already appeared on various products out there in the vast marketplace, including T-shirts, toys, puzzles, coloring books, etc.. But as I practice more and more these days with Photoshop, I've revisited my online art gallery to find select pieces to color anew from my own perspective and taste. I swiped the star field background from an online library, as well as the "Space Ghost" title logo. It was my hope to recall the spirit (pun intended) of that fun animated adventure show, causing those fans old enough to remember to hear the familiar cry of, "SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE GHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSST!!!"
