Caricature/Cartoon, Fellowship of the Ring, LORD OF THE RINGS. Pencil, ink, prismacolor marker, gouache.
This is the colored and composed, finished rendering of something I did for a neighbor kid named Casey. He's a big-time fan of the films, but didn't have the special edition DVDs with the added scenes, and extras. So I bought him a set, and held onto it until I could surprise him with a little cartoon sketch as a bonus. Well, as usual, I went overboard, and what was originally intended to be a quick, simple sketch turned into a full-blown, gigantic illustration! LOL! Boromir, and Merry didn't make the cut, but I switched Pippin for Casey, turning the kid into a hobbit. Typically for his age, he actually loves the dark, bad-guy Orcs. But-- TOUGH toe-jam, kid! You're a furry-footed halfling, now... and you'll LIKE it! LOL!
It was an oversized illustration, and it was tough to get a scan done of it. Strangely, Kinko's produced a scan streaked with noisy color lines, which I removed in Photoshop. I was tempted to spiff it up with fancy digital cheats. But I decided to leave it the way I originally rendered it. The lighting effects for the crystal on Gandalf's staff, and the glow of Frodo's elf-sword, Sting, were achieved with old-fashioned dry-brush technique, toothbrush spatter, and stipple.
And yeah, I KNOW Gollum wasn't a member of the Fellowship, but I just wanted him in there. I had fun depicting his lust for the Ring despite Sting glowing inches away. And the "pull" of the Ring on Frodo is here illustrated literally, as well as Frodo's temptation to put it on.
