JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON 2 EARTHS - CAPTAIN SUPER by Jerome-K-Moore JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON 2 EARTHS - CAPTAIN SUPER by Jerome-K-Moore
WB Animation, Character Design, JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS, Captain Super. Pencil, cleaned up and colored in Photoshop.

It was my challenge to design characters for animation in a style closely matching that of my friend, Phil Bourassa, the lead designer on this show.

On an alternate Earth, versions of our heroes are twisted and villainous. The Marvel Family has its dark counterpart in The Super Family, henchmen for Superwoman. They are endowed with their formidable abilities to serve her evil whims. I worked from designs submitted by Alex Ross, and Bruce Timm. Once a more realistic direction was chosen, Phil Bourassa and I came up with this rendition, preserving enough exaggerated cartoon elements to keep things interesting. The character is both comical and intimidating at the same time.

* In the final screen version, it's clear from the costume color scheme that the producers chose to cleverly allude to Black Adam. However, in my own personal revision here, I wanted to go another way, back toward a dark, skewed, "mirror-universe" Marvel Family color scheme.

*** At this very moment (2/22/2011), I have been informed of the sudden death of Dwayne McDuffie, the writer of this show, and creator of so many characters in the DC Universe. We are shaken and saddened here at Warner Bros. I pray for strength and comfort for his loved ones in this time of tragedy.

Awesome! I loved JLA.
It's one of the comics I learned how to read with growing up. Not to mention,
You had all of the characters in one comic for the price of one.

And why not a "super-group competitor" to the Crime Syndicate of America formed by evil versions of the Justice Society of America? Type versions of malignant Sentinel / Alan Scott, Jay Garrick, Atom Smasher, Hourman, Starman, Jade, Obsidian, Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate, Powergirl, Wildcat, Amazing-Man (Markus Clay), Doctor Mid-Nite (Dr. Pieter Cross ) Stargirl, Jakeem Thunder, Black Canary, Citizen Steel, Jesse Chambers, Tomcat (Tommy Bronson), Air Wave, Blue Devil, Cyclone (Maxine Hunkel), Darknight, Iron Munro, Huntress (Helena Bertinelli), Manhunter (Kate Spencer), King Chimera (Mon Roi), Lightning (Jennifer Pierce), Magog (David Reid), Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt), Red Beetle (Sara Butters), S.T.R.I.P.E. (Patrick Dugan), Sandy Hawkins, Spectre (Crispus Allen), Uncle Sam, The Ray (Stan Silver), Northwind (Norda Cantrell) do you think?

Dude, YOU should care. It's not just about respecting the hard work of other artists, and honoring their rights. It's about having SELF-respect, not misrepresenting yourself with artwork you never made. Swiping another person's art, and merely changing a detail or color here and there, and then re-posting it as if it were your own is the lamest sort of game ever. It's not creative at all. Honestly, that's the actions of a low-life wannabe. Don't you aspire to be better than THAT? What energy you put into thinking up alternate identities, characters, and worlds might be better applied to studying hard, and practicing to draw on a level good enough to represent yourself as creative all on your own. Claiming that you don't have the time for it is bullsh!t. If you really can't make the time to become a legitimate artist, then it's not your calling. Step off. Anyone wanting to take the stage must first have the talent, and then be EAGER to put in the hard work and the time (Usually, it's a LIFE-time.). Have some legitimate pride in yourself. Earn some real respect. It's out there waiting for you. Don't you want it?

Now, I'm generally a very nice guy. A tolerant guy. If any of this comes off as harsh, or bruising, then turn that into a positive kick in the pants. Learn from it. Down the road, you may understand that I'm only trying to help you.
So, decide what do you really want to be, and then go really BE it, honorably. Then you'll be welcome among us, or wherever it is you end up. Stop being an identity thief.

Peace.

to be honest, i don't think it's stealing because I'm not making any money off it and I'm not directly saying the outline/design is mine and was started by me, which it wasn't. So, really, it's your call

My favorite thing about Captain Super is that just like his heroic counterpart he sufers from Youngblood's Disease (an ailment common among characters drawn by Rob Liefeld and named by Linkara, the main sympton is the lack of eyes)

Heh. Very funny.
Actually, the eyes are there. He merely squints most of the time, a la Clint Eastwood.
This was a common enough characteristic among classic cartoon characters (including Mr. Magoo, Bluto and Popeye-- one of his eyes, anyway-- and the Max Fleischer Superman). In fact, the original Captain Marvel, of whom Captain Super is a parody, was often depicted with his eyes seemingly shut. It was my intent to recapture that style as best I could, even though this isn't something widely expected nowadays, and it can be disconcerting for animators. The squinty eyes thing is still found today in some anime characters (Pokemon).

I consider Captain Marvel a rare example of someone suffering from Youngblood's disease and making the best of it.
But seriously, I like that about Captain Marvel, that he doesn't have eyes (how does he see? :D); and it's a problem for a Live Action adaptation (where do you find an eyeless actor?). But eyes aside, I really like Captain Super and the Super family, it's a shame they only appear in one movie.

I am sorry for the loss of Mr. McDuffie. My prayers and sympathy are with his family. Losing a parent is like nothing else you'll experience in life. :(

Concerning your design of Captain Super, I wanted to say it seems to be a mixture of Victorian and Greek-heroic characters, like Captain Nemo and Hercules as one.

It's always interesting to see familiar faces set in other historical periods (Bats in "Gotham by Gaslight" comes to mind). You've managed to give us that other-period twist by placing the faces in another world. Intriguing. :)

Heh, I loved the the idea of an "evil Marvel family." However, the idea that this fella might be intended to represent Black Adam never even entered my mind while watching the animated movie (even with the colors that the producers ultimately selected). I immediately thought about the classic Marvel family, with Cap, Jr., and Uncle Marvel. Besides...wouldn't Black Adam have been a hero in this world?

In any case, nice work! Thanks for sharing.

Very astute observation. I do expect that the villainous Black Adam might rightfully fight on the side of right in this alternate reality.
BUT--- To stretch the hypothetical still further, in this alternate reality where Black Adam remained heroic, he would have fulfilled his mission long ago for the good wizard SHAZAM, and passed away centuries before. Perhaps this evil Marvel Family became his successors, and are playing the role which the Black Adam we're familiar with does now, refusing to relinquish their power. OR, the wizard SHAZAM could himself be evil, conveying his powers upon suitable proteges as he sees fit in this warped world.

Cheers!
