Description
WB Animation, Character Design, JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS, Captain Super Jr. Pencil, cleaned up and colored in Photoshop.
It was my challenge to design characters for animation in a style closely matching that of my friend, Phil Bourassa, the lead designer on this show.
On an alternate Earth, versions of our heroes are twisted and villainous. The Marvel Family has its dark counterpart in The Super Family, henchmen for Superwoman. They are endowed with their formidable abilities to serve her evil whims. I worked from designs submitted by Alex Ross, and Bruce Timm. Once a more realistic direction was chosen, Phil Bourassa and I came up with this rendition, preserving enough exaggerated cartoon elements to keep things interesting. The character is both comical and formidable at the same time.
* In the final screen version, it's clear from the costume color scheme that the producers chose to cleverly allude to Black Adam. However, in my own personal revision here, I wanted to go another way, back toward a dark, skewed, "mirror-universe" Marvel Family color scheme.
*** At this very moment (2/22/2011), I have been informed of the sudden death of Dwayne McDuffie, the writer of this show, and creator of so many characters in the DC Universe. We are shaken and saddened here at Warner Bros. I pray for strength and comfort for his loved ones in this time of tragedy.
