Description

Marvel Animation Character Design, HULK AND THE AGENTS OF S.M.A.S.H., Firelord.  All digital art, all on a WACOM Cintiq .

In the Second Season episode, "Planet Hulk, Part 2," Firelord, herald of Galactus, makes an appearance.
I had a bit of fun designing this guy, still in the overall style established by Jeff Wamester.
I wanted to treat his fiery crown specifically as a mohawk.  And, just as the edge-lines of his costume all echo the flame motif, I wanted the arc of his pointed ears to adhere to this as well.  His eyebrows are flame, and hot light radiates from inside his nostrils, inside his mouth, and behind his eyes, a being composed of a powerful cosmic energy.  I didn't want him to blink at all, since, logically, there shouldn't be any eye moisture, nor any need of it.  Finally, I wanted a red self-color line rather than the standard black, so the figure would more readily register as consistently hot.
Although my responsibilities center on character design, not props, I decided to also design Firelord's trademark fire-staff, adding a different spin.  Basically, it's a double-edged pitchfork.
This illustration, called an "expression," or "gesture," is a step beyond the standard character design "turn."  The intent is to depict the character in an action pose that is distinctive, visually interesting, and indicative of the dramatic mood and behavior as this relates to the story, thus providing a greater reference for the animators.
I hope you like it, and thanks so much for viewing!
