WB Product Art, HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, The Basilisk. Pencil.
This puppy was a real pill. I had to illustrate this as the pre-production department on the film were still finalizing their designs, and well before post-production worked their magic. It was a major frustration having to guess what this beastie would finally look like, while being harshly critiqued for guessing wrong. I'm only average at mind-reading after all. An earlier version of this drawing had producer David Heyman complaining that the creature as rendered didn't "look" 70 feet long. Of course, this was new information. Thanks for telling me! My art director had only previously told me to shorten the tail so that the image would fit better on product!
THEN, after I did a tight clean-up, ready for inks, word came that they added spikes to the overgrown guppy's spine! GAHH!!! After rendering ALL THOSE SCALES?!!! Grrrrrr....! Where's my electric eraser?
My 8 years old grandson and myself are very impressed by this creature. We are going through a real basilisk-phase due to Harry Potter, so thanks for this work of art
this is a cool photo.
