WB Animation Character Design, GREEN LANTERN: EMERALD KNIGHTS, "Mogo Doesn't Socialize," Kloba Vud. Pencil, Digital Color.
Here's the C-Sheet for Kloba Vud. For details on character designs for the "Mogo" storyline, please see the super-lengthy explanation here: [link]
Now, here's another super-lengthy description! Haha!
The script direction merely described the Kloba Vud character as a being composed entirely of rock. Immediately, I had to reject Marvel Comics' Ben Grimm as a model. I elected to use various animals as inspiration for the shapes, the combination of which might prove suitably alien, yet not too drastically unfamiliar or impossible to animate. So, yes, there's a frog in there, along with a tortoise, a wildebeest, and a silverback gorilla. I also threw in the Rancor, from STAR WARS: THE RETURN OF THE JEDI. Yet another influence for Kloba Vud's head and glowing eyes came from the classic STAR TREK episode, "The Apple," where they literally featured a god from a machine. Haha! I would be remiss if I didn't also acknowledge as inspiration the amazing works of Ray Harryhausen.
Continuing to reflect on STAR TREK, I next remembered the rock creature from the episode ("The Savage Curtain"), and this inspired me to make Kloba Vud more of a molten rock creature, where you could see magma glowing in the seams and joints of his body, and within his cavernous maw. I figured that, as he moved his ponderous bulk, chunks of rock would be cracking and flaking off, and would continuously be replaced by new, rapidly cooling lava. This helped make him a very formidable foe, nearly unbeatable, and certainly an irresistible challenge for Bolphunga The Unrelenting. In fact, it was my thought that Kloba Vud must be conquered by using his own weaponry against him, and even then, only by employing that weapon at the monster's weakest spots, the gaps in his stony hide.
The final screen version is different in many ways from what I envisioned. These colors, of course, are my own selections. The brand at Kloba Vud's left shoulder is intended to imply that he is a chieftain of high military rank, which would help to explain his love of battle, which rivals that of Bolphunga. The decorative metal arm and waistbands employ a motif simply patterned after the letter "V," from "Vud," which I imagined to be some sort of military title in his native language. His mouth is essentially a cave, with a stalactite forming the uvula in his throat, and the lapping lava simulating the speech normally handled by a tongue. He is not supposed to have any teeth, but I think they insisted on giving these to him as a gag for the film.
Designing this guy was fun. I hope you like him. Thanks for viewing. Cheers!

Ah too suburban for you? I live in Burbank, love it. Love your concept work aswell. Would you happen to know if there are any open summer internship in your amazing department?
Actually, Burbank isn't suburban enough for me. I'd feel a little claustrophobic living there.
As for summer internships, that's not something most folks in my station keep tabs on. We just do our work, and smile occasionally when music is played. I do know that there have been college kids who have spent some time in our offices as assistants and gofers to the production staff. I disavow any knowledge of misleading or corrupting them, or of any WB property they may have stolen.

Well, the same can be said of Treebeard, from "The Lord of the Rings." Why not a rock?
It's the magic of personification, and anthropomorphism.

No, I only work in Burbank. I don't think I could live there, though. Despite the convenience, it would make me sick.
