Comic Book Cover Art, DC Comics, STAR TREK. Pencil, Ink, Brush, Pen, Opaque gouache, China marker.
A generic design... With most of my covers, I stayed away from being too story-specific. I preferred to render scenes or images that I felt were iconic or representational to the legendary series, while focusing on the core group of characters and the Enterprise itself. I sometimes drew criticism for this, but I had to remain true to what I thought worked best.
Here, the Enterprise is deliberately immense in scale, representing an abstract celestial destination. With it's indispensable, and romantic value as the instrument by which Kirk and his crew trek the stars, Enterprise is indeed the gateway to the final frontier.
Waahhh! Your so talented! Once my dad finally gets our new scanner working I'll get some Star Trek pictures up. Though it'll be a while before I get any pen and ink pictures up.
Looking through your gallery this page really stood out. The scale of the Enterprise, the sense of perspective and the noble stature of the crew reminds me (in the best possible way) of the Soviet propaganda posters from the 1930s and '40s. Epic and powerful, just like this image, even if their intentions were entirely different.
I know that you didn't illustrate nor wrote the story for this issue...but this episode is my all time favorite Star Trek comic!!!!!! And your beautiful cover made that experience perfect!!! many thanx!! it is one of the few comics i have protected in plastic bag! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
