Portrait of Dorothy and Toto from THE WIZARD OF OZ. Pencil.

This was rendered in meticulous detail as an assist for renowned artist David Edward Byrd, who was illustrating a series of collectible WOZ plates. I can't find the other 3 I did for him. The photo reference for such an old property was very difficult to work with. It was a struggle, but turned out well.

Ironic, considering the twister, that Dorothy's last name is "Gale." LOL!

See? Cuz it's-- all about-- the-- wind-- and...
...never mind...

*UPDATE - I'm deeply honored that this piece was selected as a DAILY DEVIATION, and so many more people here seem to have suddenly found it.

As for the meticulous detail rendering, yeah, it was a bit of labor. But, although the gingham dress pattern was tedious, it was Toto that was the real bitch! LOL!!

> ahem! < ...sorry...

That is gorgeous! You certainly have a way with pencils. :)

It was me on that road
But you couldn't see me
Too many lights out, but nowhere near here

It was me on that road
Still you couldn't see me
And then flashlights and explosions...

But I have the calluses to prove it.

Amazing, the detail is phenomenal!
What was the original size of this? It looks huge on my small monitor.
Incredible, beautifully drawn.

NASA spent millions of dollars to create a pen that works in space. Russia used a pencil.
Incidentally, a cheap ballpoint pen works just as well.

Hmm... Well, I'm still not very tech saavy, and I don't really know precisely what I'm doing when I scan, and reduce, and compress, and save, and all that crap. LOL
But I scanned the original within an 9"x13" standard field. Whatever happens to it on this site is a mystery to me.

I need to be edumacated.

Lol, what I meant was how big was the original on paper? A4 or bigger? The detail was so impressive I was curious what size you drew it at. XD

As for scanning, the quality is great, (some scanners chew your art up and spit it back out! XD) but this drawing you uploaded is almost 3000 pixels wide, (which is very big) so I have to scroll all over the place to view this one.

Maybe next time you could resize it between 1000 or 2000 pixels wide? You don't have to of course, and it's ok if you don't get how to resize it like that, it would just be easier to view. :P

(Sorry if I'm speaking computer jargon! XD)

I see.

Well, same answer. The original drawing is quite within the field of 11"x14". I apologize for being obtuse. I really have "wobbly legs" dealing with computers. lol
I can't even figure out how to compress something down enough to make a decent avatar to use here on the site. I'm pathetic!

I feel like Scotty in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, where he speaks into the mouse! LOL!!

"Hello, computer?"

Ok, so quite big then. I was thinking maybe you were working on A2 or something to be able to draw so much detail. XD

Lol! Interesting way of putting your computer situation. :P
Keep trying and I'm sure you'll get it. :D
